Chasen
茶筅
The traditional 80 to 120 prong whisk carved from a single piece of mature bamboo.
Botanical & Ceremonial Context
The Chasen is the irreplaceable acoustic and mechanical instrument of the tea ceremony. Handcrafted primarily in Takayama, Nara from seasoned bamboo, its finely curled tines create the shear force needed to aerate matcha powder and water into an unbroken jade microfoam without imparting foreign tastes.
